Root Canals: What Are They and How Can They Help Me?

Root canals are a very effective form of treatment for a tooth infection. They are a quality alternative to unnecessarily extracting a tooth. At Alpine Dental and Denture Center, we provide professional and efficient care for tooth infections of all kinds. We want our patients to be fully informed of the various treatments we perform. Keep reading to learn more about root canal therapy and how it can improve your oral health.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is an effective treatment for an infected tooth. It works well because it eliminates the infection while keeping the actual tooth. If the decayed tooth is allowed to remain in your mouth without being treated, the infection can spread to the rest of the body. In order to keep the tooth and stop the infection, a root canal must be completed.

How Is a Root Canal Performed?

Root canals can be performed by a family dentist. When finished, the tooth is sealed which prevents any further damage. At Alpine Dental, we follow these four steps to complete all of our successful root canals:

  • Numb the infected tooth, including the surrounding area.
  • Access the interior of the tooth and remove all of the infected tissue.
  • Clean out the infection and disinfect the entire inner area.
  • Seal the tooth with a fake, inert nerve to prevent bacteria from re-entering.

How Long Do Root Canals Last?

Root canal treatments have the potential to last a lifetime. Practicing good oral hygiene, like the habits listed below, will help your root canal last a very long time:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day.
  • Floss regularly.
  • Visit the dentist every 6 months for a dental cleaning.
